Christmas Eve at Lyme Park

A nice bright Christmas Eve, so we headed out in good time and drove to Lyme Park, the National Trust property. Given that it’s so close to here, it’s surprising that it’s about a half hour drive — but you have to go a long way round to the entrance. We parked and headed up the hill to walk to The Cage, a hunting lodge on top of the hill, with spectacular views of Manchester and beyond one way, and the Peak District the other.

We walked on a bit, then took a path back towards the cafe where we had tea and hot chocolate. Once the house was open at 11 we headed up there, but found a huge queue with many kids — so we didn’t go in. They’ve got ‘Animal Crackers’ Christmas things going on, which would have been nice to see, but not essential. Instead we had a walk round the gardens and the orangery.

As we drove out, the car park in use was the overflow and there was a long queue of cars waiting to get in. On the way back, I jumped out of the car at Higher Poynton to walk back, in order to get my steps done. This afternoon, I’ve made a couple of dozen mince pies.

  1. It’s also a nice walk to Lyme via the bridge at Braidbar, good views at the top, enjoy your new home.
