Family Christmas in Chester

Well two families really. My sister and her best friend both have elderly relatives, including our father and my brother-in-law’s mother, so for the past couple of years they’ve done Christmas is their church hall. Anyone who hasn’t got anywhere else to go is also welcome, and as we were fairly nearby this year, we went too. There were sixteen of us in all for lunch, produced by my sister and her friend in the well equipped kitchen. There were two turkeys so neither had to be too large, and every imaginable trimming.

Then there was Christmas Pudding or a whole variety of other desserts. Presents for the kids and the grandparents followed, and then we went out for a walk. We crossed the main road and went down a path which goes through the middle of Chester Zoo, and eventually came to the canal.

Later, as if we hadn’t eaten enough, tea was served, consisting of lunch leftovers, plus cheese and crackers, and all the cakes and desserts again. What was quite nice was that people left t a time that suited them, and occasionally other people dropped on to say hello. One of our lunch number was a lady on her own who’d come to spend Christmas week looking round Chester, had come to the morning service, and been invited to stay for lunch.

We’ve actually done quite a lot of walking today, because we went for a loop down the towpath and back on Middlewood Way before we set out in the car. It’s been a really enjoyable day.
