First real trip: Day 1

Another sunny day — that’s three in a row! We were up early, as is now usual with Macc, and Adrian made a visit to the post box and the Co-op to pick up a delivery and top up some shopping. Then we got under way at around 9, at the start of a journey which won’t actually involve coming back again! There was a great view from Bollington Aqueduct as we pulled away. I have really taken to Bollington; it’s an attractive place with a nice feel, and is definitely on my list of places I could live after boating (although Adrian thinks that by then the hills could be a problem!). We were very shortly passing the winding hole where we’ve turned the past two weeks, and continuing past Adelphi Mill.

I did the first part of the journey on electric, then switched to diesel once we were past all the moored boats. A bit further on Macc woke up from a nap and Adrian took him off at a narrow to have a wee; they then waited at the next bridge to get back on.

On the approach to Macclesfield, Adrian brought out some mid-morning sustenance in the form of a buttered crumpet.

I switched back to electric to go past all the moored boats in Macclesfield too. Hovis Mill looked particularly nice today against the blue sky.

Our destination was Gurnett Aqueduct, and we had a wide choice of places to tie up. All the rings are oddly spaced though, so while we’re on a ring at the stern I had to bang in some stakes for the bow. Finding a spot where there was no concrete from the edge or the path proved quite a challenge.

This afternoon we had very welcome visitors in the form of Carol and George. They were very keen to meet Macc and brought him a fancy ball that he’s been playing with ever since, and of course we showed them the boat. We had a really lovely couple of hours catching up; the last time we saw them was in October, so a lot has happened since then.

4 miles, 0 locks.
