The thing about showers is that they come and go and there’s sometimes sunshine in between. Yesterday evening when I took Macc for a walk, there was a spectacular double rainbow complete with a reflection in the canal.

This morning Macc was up early, and our routine was a bit disrupted. We set off for the three locks at about 9, with Adrian bringing the boat while I walked ahead to get the bottom lock ready. There was a boat with a single hander just moving onto the water point, and he said he’d come up with us. He can hardly have put any water in his tank before Adrian arrived and we started up the locks.

The bottom lock had been almost empty, the middle one was empty, but the top one was almost full. It was too early for any drinkers to be outside the pub.

When we got to the top lock a hire boat arrived to come down, so I left the gates of the middle lock open for them. There was soon a second boat to come down. We were almost ready to leave the top lock when a volunteer lockie arrived at the car park gate. He immediately moaned about the open gates on the middle lock, even before he’d parked his car. We pointed out there were two boats about to come down. We carried on just another half hour or so, to a favourite spot just through Bridge 109.

We’d managed to do all our boating without being rained on, but shortly after we’d stopped it chucked it down heavily for an hour or so. Since then we’ve had dry spells, very wet spells, and even sunny spells. We took Macc out for a walk after lunch, and he was able to satisfy his current craving for carrying a stick. Sometimes they’re much larger than is comfortable.

Also today, Adrian has swapped electricity suppliers for the charity he works for, saving a lot of money, and I have renewed my phone contract at a lower price. I’ve also made a batch of fruity flapjacks.

2 miles, 3 locks. (44 miles, 27 locks)
