Fingers Crossed: Day 57

If we thought the wind was strong yesterday afternoon, worse was to come during the evening, overnight, and for most of today. The clocks went back last night too, which kind of meant an extra hour of listening to the wind howling round the boat. I was glad then when I’d swapped the stove chimney over when we arrived, I’d used the extension as well as the H. Both make it less likely that the stove will get blown out.

The good thing was that it was dry and pretty sunny at times too. Adrian took Macc for his early walk, and spotted a tree down from the offside beyond the next bridge. It wasn’t blocking the canal, but as there’s also a narrow from the towpath side it looked a bit tricky. By the time we walked along later, several boats had been past and had reduced the length of the branches.

The handful of boats that have been by didn’t pear to be enjoying the experience. They were mostly crabbing down the canal trying not to get blown into the bank. Lining up for the bridges also looked like a challenge. Each time we saw one we were glad we had the time to be able to go nowhere today. This morning I finished a magazine article and submitted it, and this afternoon I’ve made a chilli sauce which will have roasted squash added for tonight’s dinner. Macc has also been for a couple of decent walks. He loves dashing up and down carrying sticks or branches, whatever he can find, and the wind seems to make him even more mad.

The forecast said the winds would die down this afternoon, and they have eventually. Tomorrow is meant to be better still, so we’ll aim to make a move in the morning.
